Eat Eighty

The story

A lot of people see me and assume that I’ve never had any weight problems. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I struggled with my weight for almost half of my life.

As a child, I loved to eat, but I had no portion control.

I also ate when I was happy, or sad, or bored, or really, whenever the mood struck.

For a while, my kid metabolism kept up. But when I stopped growing taller, I started growing larger.

At 13, I went on my first diet – WeightWatchers. I lost a few pounds…and so began my obsession.

From then on, I was always dieting.

I jumped from one fad to the next in an attempt to force my body into skinny submission.

The Problem

Even if I saw some immediate results, diets ALWAYS failed long-term.

When I lost the weight and resumed normal habits, all the weight returned… and then some.

It was a vicious cycle, and I gained and lost the same 35 pounds throughout my college years.

I swung from obsessing over low-fat EVERYTHING to bingeing on ice cream, burgers, and fries. The pendulum swung constantly between extreme deprivation and uncontrollable eating.

I felt ashamed, sick to my stomach, and like a complete failure.

By the time I finished my graduate degree, I was overweight (again), depressed, fatigued, and almost always dealing with a respiratory infection from my asthma.

My joints throbbed, my muscles burned, my head pounded. I was always bloated, and I never slept well. I craved sugar all the time. I hated myself, my body, and the way I felt.

Enter The Eighty

Philosophy

By the time I finished my graduate degree, I was overweight (again), depressed, fatigued, and almost always dealing with a respiratory infection from my asthma.

My joints throbbed, my muscles burned, my head pounded. I was always bloated, and I never slept well. I craved sugar all the time. I hated myself, my body, and the way I felt.

Knowing what I know now, I was dealing with a nasty hormone imbalance caused by my unhealthy eating habits and my stressful lifestyle.

While visiting a college friend, her mom asked me, “What do you think would happen if you stopped all this dieting and just started eating real food again?”

I looked at her like she had two heads…but her question shifted something inside me.

What would happen if you stopped dieting…

…and started eating real food again?

I have gained and lost.

I have yo-yoed.

I have cursed at the scale.

I have hit rock bottom with my health and my physique.

I have felt the deep despair of restriction, and of nothing seeming to work or being sustainable.

I finally escaped the hamster wheel when I made the decision to HAVE a diet instead of BE ON a diet.

This choice changed my health, my weight, my mindset, and the trajectory of my entire life.
